U.S. Army Atlanta Recruiting Battalion
The Atlanta Recruiting Battalion, initially a local administrative office of the Third U.S. Army’s Recruiting Service, was responsible for the management of recruiting stations in the northern two-thirds of the state of Georgia. It was referred to as Atlanta Recruiting Main Station (RMS). On October 1, 1964 the United States Army Recruiting Command (USAREC) was activated as a single command to handle recruiting and retention for the Active Army as a whole. The Atlanta RMS was part of the new command under the Third (3RD) Recruiting District, which had responsibility for the southeastern region of the United States. In 1974, 3rd Recruiting District became the Southeast Region Recruiting Command (SERRC) and the Atlanta RMS became the Atlanta District Recruiting Command (DRC). The territory of the Atlanta office remained essentially the same during this time but the mission was increased for all of USAREC as the Army Reserve recruiting responsibility was added. Again changing names in 1983, SERRC became 2d Recruiting Brigade and the Atlanta DRC acquired its present designation as Recruiting Battalion Atlanta or, more commonly, the Atlanta Recruiting Battalion. Throughout its long history and many incarnations the Atlanta Recruiting Battalion has been a productive main stay and critical part of the Army’s vital mission to recruit the necessary young men and women, America’s best, to fill the ranks of a modern, high technology Army.
